With the help of a Rural Development grant of $10,000, the Ahmeek Fire Department was able to purchase an off-road, skid unit used to fight brush fires. The skid unit is equipped with a hose, 95-gallon water tank, foam tank, pumps, dischargers and a patient gurney, Ahmeek Fire Chief Mike Maninga said. The ranger, purchased from RKO Enterprises out of Indiana, will be used for fighting brush fires and for off-road rescue.

A Westmoreland County man has been charged with vehicular homicide — and several other offenses — for the crash that killed 15-year-old North Star student Johnny Blough. Brandon Behie, 23, of New Florence was arraigned Friday afternoon before District Judge Denise Thiel in Ligonier. He has been released on an unsecured bond under the conditions that he avoid alcohol use and contact with Blough's family.

Green Bay Packers Johnny Jolly, Al Harris and rookie B.J. Raji were fined $5,000 each by the NFL on Friday for actions in last weekend's loss to Minnesota. Defensive tackle Jolly was fined for unnecessary roughness for head-butting Minnesota running back Chester Taylor. Cornerback Harris was fined for unnecessary roughness for grabbing a helmet-opening to make a tackle, and defensive tackle Raji was fined for a facemask violation.
